My Top 10 N64 Games That Still Hold Up Today
The Nintendo 64 had a relatively small library compared to its rivals, but what it lacked in quantity, it made up for with some of the most memorable games of all time. These are my top 10 — the ones I think still hold up brilliantly today.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Still considered one of the greatest games ever made. Its world, music, and sense of adventure remain unmatched, even decades later.
2. Super Mario 64
The game that defined 3D platforming. It’s pure, joyful, and still feels surprisingly modern to play.
3. GoldenEye 007
A cultural phenomenon. Four-player split-screen, screen-peeking, and Oddjob debates — this was the multiplayer game of the late ’90s.
4. Star Fox 64 (Lylat Wars)
Fast-paced space combat with branching paths and iconic voice lines. Still a thrill to barrel roll through today.
5. Banjo-Kazooie
Charming, colourful, and endlessly inventive. Rare at its absolute best.
6. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
Darker, moodier, and more experimental than Ocarina. Its time-loop system makes it one of the most unique Zeldas.
7. Mario Kart 64
Simple by today’s standards, but its tracks, items, and chaotic multiplayer still bring the laughs.
8. Super Smash Bros.
The humble beginning of Nintendo’s biggest fighting franchise. Basic, but perfect for quick battles with friends.
9. Perfect Dark
GoldenEye’s spiritual successor. Bigger, deeper, and packed with features that pushed the N64 to its limit.
10. Paper Mario
A quirky, charming RPG with a timeless art style and witty writing. Proof that simplicity can age beautifully.
Honourable Mentions
- Diddy Kong Racing – A rare kart racer that rivalled Mario Kart and added adventure mode.
- Wave Race 64 – Simple but technical, with water physics that still impress.
- F-Zero X – Blisteringly fast futuristic racing.
- Donkey Kong 64 – The ultimate collect-a-thon (for better or worse).
- Conker’s Bad Fur Day – Crude, funny, and surprisingly sharp.
- Mario Party 2 – Board game chaos that could make or break friendships.
Narrowing it down to just 10 was tough — the N64 might not have had the biggest library, but its highs were legendary.
